Joel and Patti Sirmon raise row crops and sweet potatoes at their farm in Baldwin County, alongside Joel’s brother, James. Their work earned Sirmon Farms the title of Alabama’s 2024 Farm of Distinction. In October, Joel will represent the state in the Sunbelt Ag Expo’s Southeastern Farmer of the Year contest. Watch to learn a little more about this south Alabama couple.
Scientists believe that approximately 85 million years ago, a giant meteor struck the area that is now Wetumpka, Alabama. For some area residents, it feels like the idea for a visitor center dedicated to the meteor took about that many years to bring to fruition. (But it was really only about two decades.) It’s called the Wetumpka Impact Crater Discovery and Visitor Center, and it’s located right smack-dab in the middle of downtown near a new art installation that’s also dedicated to the meteor. We hope you enjoy touring these new spots a whole lot more than the dinosaurs enjoyed welcoming that meteor!
Do you know where your steak comes from? Do you know all the different products that come from cattle byproducts? Those lessons and more can be learned at The Mooseum in downtown Montgomery. Admission is completely free. It’s housed in the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association building, and its a big way the group educates others about cattle farming and the industry that’s responsible for growing all those steaks, beef roasts and hamburgers that we enjoy!
Thanks to the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association for providing our show this great content!
What’s better than corn itself? How about corn combined with bacon! It’s got the juice AND the salty goodness of pork. Add in some fresh tomatoes for a little acidic pop, too! Plus, when you get all those ingredients from Sweet Grown Alabama farmers, it just tastes better! Enjoy this Southern Bite recipe for Sweet Corn Salad with Bacon.
