“You can have the best seed in the world, if you ain’t got nowhere to put it, you’re out of luck. Land is a big deal.” -Ben Looney
Finding land to farm is a tough task in Alabama’s fastest growing counties. Those include Limestone County where Ben Looney grew up and Madison County, the original home of David Lee. For these two farmers, keeping the family farm going has meant relocating major operations to land more than 200 miles from home.
Plus, we continue our celebration of 10 years of Simply Southern by bringing back some familiar faces. For the first six years of the show, Sidney Phelps anchored gardening and cooking segments. Find out what he’s up to now!
You might think Noah’s Ark landed in Eclectic, Alabama, but it’s just the happy farm run by Ally Andrews. She named her farm “Wildly Blessed” because it’s how she feels about embracing the farm life after leaving the corporate world. She’s happy to share those blessings through teaching classes about tending animals, homesteading and beekeeping.
You may already know we’re celebrating 10 years of Simply Southern. But did you know the concept really came to fruition during a meeting in the office of Alabama Farmers Federation Executive Director Paul Pinyan? We welcome Paul to the studio to take a look back at what the show has accomplished and to look forward to the show’s future.
Plus, enjoy a Discover Extension segment in the Paint Rock Valley in Jackson County. Graham Farm and Nature Center is part of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System thanks to a donation. It’s a delightful spot for birding, glamping, kayaking and hiking, and it’s open for everyone to enjoy!
Looking for a good beef recipe that doesn’t require turning on the oven or firing up the grill (since it’s a *smidge* hot outside)? Stacey Little of Southern Bite has just what you’re looking for with this favorite New Orleans sandwich. Watch to see just how easy it is to create his Slow Cooker Roast Beef Debris Po’ Boys. And thanks to the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association for making this segment possible.
