Show 1107 – Little Mountain Growers

Little Mountain Growers began over 40 years ago with David Funderburk and his parents. Now, he and wife Leah are preparing the next generation to take over the family business of growing plants and shrubs for wholesale. It’s a good thing Joy, who once dreamed of being a Radio City Rockette, finds as much joy using heavy machinery as she once did doing high kicks.

To some, it may have looked like a simple shallow spot along Alabama’s Gulf Coast. But to two retired marine biologists, it was a future business. Along with a third partner, they created Navy Cove Oysters where they farm-raise the shellfish. But they’re not selfish about sharing. In fact, the trio even started the annual Fort Morgan Oyster Fest to celebrate these yummy mollusks.

We can’t agree on everything, but I bet we can all agree on the need to stop litter. That’s the goal of Alabama PALS — People Against a Littered State — and the group’s new Executive Director Jamie Mitchell. She shares more about volunteer-driven programs that help rid communities of unsightly litter, including the upcoming Spring Cleanup.

Plus, enjoy a Discover Alabama Extension segment about pollinators. Dani Carroll of Extension explains more about the most common pollinators in Alabama, the reasons they’re important and ways gardeners can keep bees and other pollinators healthy.

It may be an acquired taste, but it’s one worth acquiring. And it’s good served as a dip with crackers or served on bread as finger sandwiches. Watch Stacey Little of SouthernBite.com make this trademark recipe for Deviled Ham.
