Show 919 – Smocking

Smocking is a treasured Southern tradition. It’s a style of sewing pleats into fabric, and it’s something Carol Glass of Franklin County has been doing for decades. While she’s created countless one-of-a-kind pieces for her children and grandchildren, she now has another reason… or three… to smock.

Roger Owens is a working man. When he was in trucking, his CB handle was Boarhog. He and his wife, Becky, adopted that same name for their restaurant when they decided to take a chance and turn their passion for barbeque into a business. It doesn’t take long to find out why folks flock to Boarhog’s Barbeque in Madison County.

August’s high temperatures can be tough on fruits and vegetables, but thankfully Alabama farmers know how to handle the heat to ensure there’s still plenty of fresh produce this time of year. Sweet Grown Alabama’s Aisling Fields joins us again this month to discuss What’s in Season.

Plus, we visit Kelsey Hopper of Cassebaum Farms in Baldwin County to learn more about how watermelons are grown. They’re one of many farms you can find easily through an online search at SweetGrownAlabama.org.

Move over tomato sandwiches and tomato pie! There’s a new tomato dish in town! This Shortcut Tomato Focaccia is an easy and delicious way to feature everyone’s favorite summer produce. Get the recipe from Southern Bite and thanks to Sweet Grown Alabama for making this segment possible.
