Agriculture is a big industry, and there are a lot of career options available aside from becoming a farmers. Earlier this academic year, high school students attended an Ag Careers Tour hosted by the Madison County Soil & Water Conservation District. While there was a lot of fun to be had at the agritourism stop of Tate Farms, this event also yielded life lessons about various careers in agriculture — from financing and sales to computer programming and governmental relations.
There once was a time that most folks lived on a farm, and for those who didn’t, they had relatives that made their living off the land. Today, many people have no connection to agriculture at all, but thanks to modern technology and aspiring farmers, it’s easy to learn where your food and fiber comes from. Just tune in to farming channels on YouTube like Triple R Farms with content produced by Lowndes County farmer Daniel Rhyne.
In this latest Rural Roundup of agricultural news, we’re covering:
- Winner of the 2024 Alabama Farmers Federation Young Farmers Division Discussion Meet
- New faces elected to the Federation’s board of directors
- Scholarships available for college-bound students
- Congressional action that approved a resolution with economic aid for farmers
Plus, learn the benefits of growers’ permits available through Alabama Extension and the reasons they’re needed by any farmer who wants to sell direct to consumers. By the way — they’re FREE! You’ll see all that in the Discover Alabama Extension segment.

The program description on Dish Network shows “Driskell Family Farms but the show had nothing on them. I grew up with the Driskells so the description caught my attention. I record and enjoy all your shows.
