Show 1019 – OYFF Finalists the Wendlands

It’s time for our annual features of the three finalists for the Outstanding Young Farm Family Award. Drew and Lauren Wendland live in Autaugaville where they are raising their three sons. Drew is the fifth generation at Autauga Farming Co., and he’s responsible for raising their crops as well as handling soil fertility for hay land and pastures. Lauren is a Nurse Practitioner in neighboring Selma. We hope you enjoy learning more about their family and the work they do that earned them the title of the 2024 2nd Runners-up for the Outstanding Young Farm Family!

Plus, we continue our celebration of 10 years by visiting with Sulynn Creswell of Black Belt Treasures in Camden. We’ve featured their gallery on the show as well as a number of their featured artists. We appreciate her sharing her thoughts on our big anniversary year!

Pottery wasn’t always Julianne Hansen’s form of artistic expression. But it’s what she turned to as she grieved the death of her stepson who served in the military. Now, before every Memorial Day, she’s helping others honor their loved ones through the Poppy Project displayed in downtown Prattville.

We have another brand new Rural Roundup of agricultural news. Watch to learn more about:

  • Deadlines for applying for the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries’ Century, Heritage and Bicentennial Farm programs
  • This year’s Alabama Catfish Farmer of the Year (because August is National Catfish Month!)
  • The Adopt a Dairy Cow Program for school classrooms
  • The new role for Dr. Kim Mullenix in the College of Agriculture at Auburn University
  • Upcoming events for beekeepers and Alabama Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association members

This might’ve been a childhood favorite dessert of yours, and it’s ready for its comeback! Stacey Little of Southern Bite shows you how to make a traditional Vanilla Wafer Cake that’s made even more scrumptious with Priester’s Pecans. Thanks to Priester’s for making this segment possible.
