Show 1008 – Athens Main Street – May

Athens, Alabama, is in the center of one of the fastest growing counties in the state. There’s plenty of development happening out around the interstate, but the true gem of the town is downtown. The square is teeming with businesses – both new and old. A lot of the energy you feel around town is thanks to Athens Main Street.

Baseball wouldn’t be baseball without those who played in the time of the Negro Leagues. Their impact on the game, and more importantly, their courage in life are beautifully illustrated at the Negro Southern League Museum in Birmingham.

This newest Rural Roundup of agricultural news and accolades includes:

  • An update on crops from the USDA’s Crop Progress and Condition Report
  • Recent happenings within groups of leaders in forestry and agriculture in Alabama
  • A quick update on the legislative session, which included a bill that will help the Alabama Farm Center at Hallmark Farms project move forward
  • Call for Farm Dog of the Year nominations
  • Call for nominations for the Alabama Farmers Federation’s Duncan and Rittenour awards which recognize the work of staff at Auburn University College of Agriculture and Alabama Extension
  • Deadline to apply to compete in Alabama Young Farmers competitions including Excellence in Agriculture and Discussion Meet

They’re a favorite around the holidays, but there are no rules saying this treat has to be relegated to the month of December. Stacey Little of Southern Bite shows you how to make these Peanut Butter Balls, and we encourage you to make and enjoy these any time of year. And thanks to the Alabama Peanut Producers Association for sponsoring this segment.
