Show 703 – World’s Largest Peanut Boil

You can see the pavilion on U.S. Highway 331 in Luverne with its numerous “World’s Largest Peanut Boil” signs anytime of year. But things really get heated up over Labor Day weekend when members of the local Shrine Club start boiling batches of peanuts. Over 36 tons of boiled peanuts were sold at the most recent event. Funds raised through the World’s Largest Peanut Boil help support Shriners Hospitals, which serves sick children in the U.S., Canada and Mexico with more than 20 hospitals.

No matter the odds, some people are destined for greatness. From his roots growing up in Alabama, Jesse Owens went on to break barriers in the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany when he disproved Hitler’s notion that white athletes reigned supreme. Owens won four gold medals in the 100 meter, 200 meter, the broad jump and the relay.

It’s a story every American should know, and you can learn more about Jesse Owens – the athlete and the humanitarian – at the Jesse Owens Memorial Park and Museum in Oakville, Alabama.

It’s time for another Ask a Farmer segment! We visited with Blount County’s Jimmy Miller as he was harvesting their 2020 crop of peanuts to find out the answers to these questions:

  • What are the advantages to growing so many crops on your farm?
  • What does crop rotation mean?
  • How does a peanut grow? What is its life cycle?
  • What kinds of peanuts grow in Alabama?
  • What products do your peanuts end up in?

If you have a question about farming, email it to askafarmer@simplysoutherntv.net. If we use your question on the air, we’ll send you a goodie bag of Simply Southern swag!

It’s important to eat your veggies! This week, Stacey Little shares a way to prepare cabbage that will please even the pickiest of eaters. Enjoy this recipe for Fried Cabbage from SouthernBite.com.

Your show did not air last week on Ch 8. Will you be rerunning the show on Bama in a Box, since it did not air as scheduled in Montgomery. A paid advertisement ran in its place😪

Hi, Virginia! Thank you for reaching out. This is the first we’ve heard of it not airing last week. I’m only asking this because we did our biggest time/station changes in Montgomery – but did you tune in at 10:30 a.m.? We switched stations and times in this market.
