You can see the pavilion on U.S. Highway 331 in Luverne with its numerous “World’s Largest Peanut Boil” signs anytime of year. But things really get heated up over Labor Day weekend when members of the local Shrine Club start boiling batches of peanuts. Over 36 tons of boiled peanuts were sold at the most recent event. Funds raised through the World’s Largest Peanut Boil help support Shriners Hospitals, which serves sick children in the U.S., Canada and Mexico with more than 20 hospitals.
No matter the odds, some people are destined for greatness. From his roots growing up in Alabama, Jesse Owens went on to break barriers in the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany when he disproved Hitler’s notion that white athletes reigned supreme. Owens won four gold medals in the 100 meter, 200 meter, the broad jump and the relay.
It’s a story every American should know, and you can learn more about Jesse Owens – the athlete and the humanitarian – at the Jesse Owens Memorial Park and Museum in Oakville, Alabama.
