In 1923, when WC Bates married his wife, Helen, the couple received nine turkey eggs as a wedding present from his Aunt Mamie Bates. Nearly 100 years later, the Bates family name is synonymous with high quality, farm-raised turkeys. They sell products online and feature their turkey meat in the family restaurant, Bates House of Turkey, in Fort Deposit.

Just a little farther south, teenager Weston Spivey is raising and marketing bison. That’s in between his time running a sign company, taking college classes and serving as a county commissioner.

With complicated machinery and massive grain bins, farming is a dangerous job. Even when a farmers follows all necessary safety procedures, things can still go wrong. That’s why the Alabama Farmers Cooperative took time to train first responders in handling farm emergencies during its annual Grain Expo.
